11/10/22 White Villages of Andalusia

Beach overlooking Cadiz

Greetings from the beautiful and sunny south of Spain! Well, we did have a couple hours of rain on Tuesday AM, so there’s that 😜

Vault holding Phoenicians remains, found in Cadiz

Tour guide Cindy and I spent Tuesday walking and exploring more of Cadiz! (25,000 steps) After a wonderful shrimp dinner she says “ Road trip tomorrow, with hills and steps and cobblestones! Och, says I, my favorite three things in the world! Off we go to Arcos de la Frontera, one of Spains famous white city’s.

Arcos from the river below. Not my picture.

Arcos is tremendously old, as it’s cliffs and high hill attracted primitive man here very, very early. The Moor’s first settled the city and laid it out in the tiny streets you see here.

Streets are lined with potted plants, very beautiful

The usual story, wars with neighbor’s, Romans, crusaders, Black plague and lack of opportunity led the population of the city to decline until the 1960’s when tourists started to arrive.

Bull fighting ring, Arcos

Quick side note, Bull fighting is still very very popular here. Each larger city has a ring and they still use them. We’ll pass!

San Miguel church (no relation)

We park the trusty Peugeot safely underground with limited stress😎 and off we go climbing the hill.

Love this door. This church, like so many, was closed.
St Mary’s Basilica, we were there for the 11:00 AM bells. 🙏🏻
Panoramic view from the city’s top
The streets are very tight and traffic is still allowed 😳
Lots of restaurants and shops. I’m sure it’s crazy busy here at prime time, we were basically alone😎
Yes, they drive cars through here

Cliffs from below
Fantastic view from our picnic lunch spot
Jerez de La Frontera

Ok, back to the trusty Peugeot and 1/2 hour to Jerez de la Frontera. Jerez is a medium size city, that is trying to clean up. Not lots to see, except Sherry distilleries.

Sherry distillery
I don’t know about you, but Cindy and I can pass on Sherry tours and tastings at €20 each.

After 17,000 steps, up and down hills, I vote we go home. Knee did fantastic! Couldn’t have done this with the old knee.

We voted for a cold beer reward when we returned home. Cadiz has hundreds and hundreds of Tapas bars and fantastic views.
I can’t leave the seafood market alone. Dinner anyone?😎

Adios Amigos, I’m hearing about a ferry trip today and some beach time, 74 and sunny 😎
