Old Cathedral Salamanca Spain

Greetings from beautiful, cool and wet Salamanca Spain!

When tour guide Cindy told me we were going to visit Salamanca on the trip across Spain to Cadiz, I had pictures of the Salamanca family from “ Breaking Bad” in my head!

View from our new patio in Salamanca.

Turns out I was wrong, Salamanca’s a wonderful city.

We stopped in Haro, outside of Logrono for a few wine tastings as we missed them when they were closed for All Saints Day
Delicious wine, top shelf stuff
It’s a five hour drive from Logrono to Salamanca, beautiful scenery.
Wherever you look, the land looks like it’s been mined, and now crops are growing in the old mines.
That’s because all the buildings are made of Sandstone, which is what was mined here, unbelievable!
Where the heck is Salamanca your asking? Right next to Portugal!
We haven’t driven in the city for a while. Checking in to our VRBO and parking the trusty Peugeot underground was a little harrowing, but we survived. Very nice part of town, quick walk to stretch the legs. Low and behold, we find a Spanish ham store!
The neighborhood Fruteria.
Ok, up bright and early, rain and wind in the forecast! First stop, the Churros shop, you know we are in Spain.
Salamanca is about 200k in population. It’s home to the University of Salamanca, so lots and lots of college kids. This is the beautiful Plaza Mayor
There’s a book fair in the middle, little hard to see in it’s true grandeur.
Next up , Salamanca Central Market
Beautiful, note the stained glass windows
Beautiful presentation
Spain loves smoked meat, me too! Cindy says “when you’ve seen one sausage, ya seen them all” 🤔
Beautiful

Ok, let’s keep walking. It’s a hard city to photograph because the buildings are so close together. Great walking city.

Unbelievably beautiful, everywhere
The details on the buildings, spectacular
Every corner, you look up, 😃
Ok, literally within blocks, the old cathedral. I was stopped in my shoes, it’s staggeringly spectacular!
Tour guide Cindy, who is Catholic, took a walk through it. I’ll share some of the staggeringly beautiful pictures.
Wow!
Wow, that’s all I can say

Ok, walk down the hill to Puente Romano, built by who else, the Romans

Puente Romano
It’s now a pedestrian and cycling bridge, still in use!
Back to the Old Cathedral
Tour guide Cindy has read about this walking tour across the tops of the towers and church, so off she goes. I get vertigo and hate 600 year old Tower steps, so I’ll people watch 😜
Notice the walkway on top of the cathedral 😳
Unbelievably detailed work
Panoramic view from top
You get to walk into the top of the cathedral
The top, the bell tower
Spectacular views
Ok, I’m exhausted watching Cindy. Let’s check out the local bakery ✔️👍😎
Ok, 17,000 steps and hundreds of stairs for your Tour Director, we deserve Tapa’s
Fantastic city, couldn’t be more surprised. Off tomorrow for a six hour drive to Cadiz, Spain. Cadiz is located right on the Atlantic and we are hearing about high’s in the upper 70s.

Eleven days in Cadiz. We have a little vacation planned and hopefully some sun time. Talk with you from the beach 😎
